Weeks 17-25: 5/5-7/6

So, that’s two whole months, huh? Complacency really is a self-perpetuating phenomenon. Fortunately, we have at least given minimal effort over this time to segregate new releases each week into separate playlists, which now allows us to go back and fill in some gaps. There has been SO much excellent music released in the past two months, and it would be a damn shame for it to lack representation on our comprehensive playlist.

This update functions to provide a week-by-week playlist update with our favorite songs from the past nine weeks. As usual, Jacob and I will each pick a weekly winner and declare a winner of the week. We’ll then take a step back at the end of this smattering of tracks and decide just how the passage of THE BELT should shake out.

What this post will lack is any sort of justification or commentary on our picks. We’re keeping it pretty bare bones so we can get this bit done and get on with resuming a normal posting schedule with current music. So if you’re looking for detailed discussion on the artistry of the music of the last nine weeks,

Without further adieu, we present to you a fire hose stream of aural indulgences from Spring/Summer 2017:

PASSAGE OF THE BELT

Just to refresh — our last belt-winner song was “DNA” by Kendrick Lamar, from the masterful DAMN, regarded by many as the frontrunner for the year’s best album. It was Kendrick’s second title grab of the year and had a real strong claim on the hardware. But let’s just see if our favorite LA rocker sisters have anything to say about that.

Caaaaaallllviiiinnnnn. You got this one. This song bangs, Future kills his contribution, and Khalid proves why he’s 2017’s hottest hook singer. Get it.

Winner…

Do your dance, France & Chance. Three weeks — three winners. Surely this pace can’t sustain…or can it?

No.

Let’s skip a few weeks ahead to Week 23, one of the absolute strongest week of releases the year has seen. It was a knock-down, drag-out, bloody royal rumble of a cage match brawl to grab real estate on the playlist this week. The type of warrior to rise from that type of carnage deserves a run at the belt.

VS

Congrats, Bam Bam Baklava. To steal a phrase from you…

Fuck, that’s delicious!

Week 24 saw the release of Vince Staples’ Big Fish Theory. Vince is my favorite current rapper not named Kendrick. The winner for that week was a song by Vince featuring Kendrick. It’s all adding up — but passing the belt to “Yeah Right” doesn’t feel quite…right. Yeah. I think we may have goofed up way back in Week 4 when we crowned Cold War Kids’ “Love is Mystical” the weekly winner and belt holder over Vince’s “Bagbak,” but hindsight is 20/20. Vince may have missed his shot this year, but it’s ok. He’s young, he’ll recover.

Either way, Action holds onto the belt for now and keeps it through week 25 (shouts to Mura Masa and Christine and the Queens).

That does it for the big catch-up post. There’s lots more to listen to on the playlist and a steady stream of great music being released all the time — as they say, no rest for the wicked.

Stay tuned for a return to a more regular posting schedule starting soon with our Week 26 post.

LLLLLET’S GET READY TO RUMBLLLLLEEEEE!!!
